Where does the phpBB save attachment files?

I'm new to phpBB. Before I decide to switch to phpBB, I would know how big the database is required if uploading file is allowed.

Does anyone know if phpBB saves the attachment as file on server, or it puts everything into database? If it is the latter, the database must be huge when uploading is allowed.
